There are many simple and complicated answers to this question. If you took a national poll and asked “why should a child’s sugar intake be limited?” I’d bet one of the most popular answers would be “too much sugar will rot their teeth!” While this is a valid concern, it is only one of many serious health problems related to over consuming sugar. I have read a lot of research that has explained the many reasons too much sugar is such a poor choice. But for me the bottom line for reducing refined sugar in my children’s diet is because if they are filling up on sweets, they are missing the opportunity to eat something healthier, or more nutrient rich. Giving our children sugar not only fills them up with empty calories it actually robs their growing bodies of vital nutrients. Sugar actually leaches minerals and B-vitamins from your child’s body.
